Takht Sharqi at the Multaqa Social Club, UAEU

This Wednesday evening, 13th Nov., Takht Sharqi, led by Dr Hasan Wahwa, and featuring singers Dana Obied and Fadi Layon, will be performing for us at the Multaqa Social Club, UAEU close to the centre of Al Ain.

The “Classical Evening” will begin with a Talk on ‘The Life and Work of Frederic Chopin‘ by Katarina Peers. This presentation will be a fitting introduction to the performance of five pieces written by the master composer.

The doors open at 6:45 pm for a 7 pm commencement. Interest in this event has been very strong with well over 1,000 visits to the Takht Sharqi posting on our Facebook page.

The Five Pianists Performing Chopin

We are delighted that five of the UAE’s leading concert pianists have accepted our invitation to perform works by Frederic Chopin for us on Wednesday, 13th November.

These five highly talented and experienced performers all have very impressive resumes.

Dr Ioannis Potamousis 

ImageIoannis Potamousis’ performances have taken him to important international venues in Europe and the Middle East as well as across North America.  He has played at the Athens Concert Hall, the international summer festival and, on his recent Middle Eastern tour, to concert halls in Palestine, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The Dubai appearance included collaboration with the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Dubai.

Currently he is the head of keyboard studies and music events at Brighton College Abu Dhabi as well as the Director of the Young Artists Concerto Competition of UAENSO.

Katarina Peers

ImageIn 2010, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, the UAE Ministry of Culture, and the Embassy of Poland in Abu Dhabi, on the occasion of the celebration of the Bicentenary of Chopin’s birth, she organised and directed the 1st UAE International Chopin Competition for piano students. In March 2010 she cooperated with Kuwait Chamber Philharmonia organising the 1st Gulf International Chopin Competition (February-March 2010). She was also a juror in both these competitions.

In June 2010 Katarina was awarded the Polish Honorary Medal for Merit to Polish Culture, conferred by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of Poland for her continuous work in promotion of Polish classical music in the UAE. We hope that Katarina will be providing us with some background information about the life of Chopin as a composer, as well as performing his works.

Dr Jordan Rashkov

ImageDr. Rashkov is a frequent guest at prestigious music festivals across central Europe and in the USA. His performances have been recorded and broadcast by the Austrian Television company ORF, ZDF-Germany, RAI-Italy, Bulgarian and Slovenian National televisions, and the PBS in the USA, and also by the largest non-profit station for classical music in America- KUSC.

As a soloist Dr. Rashkov has collaborated with the Stuttgart Symphony and the Hoffer Symphony orchestras in Germany; the Burbank and USC Symphony orchestras in the USA; the Hugo Wolf Festival and Young Symphony orchestras in Austria; and the Lago di Garda Festival orchestra in Italy among others. As a chamber musician Dr. Rashkov has collaborated with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra, Hagen Quartet, Members of Metropolitan Opera in New York and members of the Volks Opera in Vienna.

In 2006 Dr.Rashkov performed in the Hollywood production, “Ivory”, along with Golden Globe and Academy Award winning artist Martin Landau.

Yana Welch

ImageYana Welch is an experienced pianist who is equally skilful in solo repertoire and as an accompanist to all instruments, including Arabic national instruments such as the Oud.  She is constantly expanding her repertoire.  She has enjoyed significant success as a teacher with her students regularly winning international competitions.

Yana has extensive teaching experience and is currently working as a piano teacher and accompanist at the renowned music department of Brighton College, Abu Dhabi.  She has also worked previously at the International Music Institute in Abu Dhabi.  Her gift for teaching children was honed while working with the Tashkent Conservatoire in Uzbekistan.  During this time Yana was able to explore different aspects of music making by participating in chamber music groups, taking the role of concert master for the string department and as a pianist with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Uzbekistan and the Orchestra of Bolshoi Theatre of Opera and Ballet.

and Gulmira Abdulkhalikova

ImageGulmira trained at the Moscow State Conservatoire and has performed solo recitals in cities around the world. For a number of years she was a teacher at the Almaty National State Conservatoire and at the Special State Music School for Gifted Children in Almaty before relocating to Riyadh in 2008. During her time in Riyadh she founded a children’s choir and a chamber ensemble.  Currently, however, she is a key figure in the local Al Ain music scene.

Gulmira performs with the newly-formed Al Ain Chamber Orchestra and is the accompanist for the Al Ain Choral Society. Recently Gulmira became a music teacher at the House of Arts.

All five will be performing in the auditorium of the Multaqa Social Club, UAEU, on 13th November. The doors open at 6:45 pm.

Takht Sharqi will provide the opening performance in the UAEU’s centrally located Multaqa Social Club’s auditorium.

And, after the performance of classical Oriental works on traditional instruments; the five virtuoso pianists will play a selection of works by Chopin. That’s an exceptional combination of musical forms!
