We are very pleased to confirm that Kathak dancer and choreographer, Nishi Singh, [photo], will be performing for the first time in Al Ain -at one of our very own Al Ain Music Festival 2015 events- on Friday, 13th November [N.B. not 20th November as originally planned].
Born in Lucknow, Nishi started learning Kathak at the age of 6 with Guru Pt. Rajendra Gangani Ji. Later she joined The Kathak Kendra, New Delhi. There she trained with Guru Pt. Durga Lalji. After this Guru’s sad demise, she trained under the wings of Guru Pt. Birju Maharajji and Guru Smt.Urmila Nagarji.
Nishi completed her post diploma in Kathak from Kathak Kendra and was invited, soon afterwards, to perform all over India as an ‘A’ grade artist by the Song and Drama Division of the Government of India.
In 2001 Nishi relocated to Mumbai. Fortune smiled upon her fate in that city as she got the blessings of the Kathak Queen Smt. Sitara Deviji. After short and intense training under Sitara Devi, Nishi completed her Kathak education – with eternal gratification to all her esteemed Gurus.
Subsequently, in 2011, she relocated again, this time to Oman; and continued to teach and perform Kathak. She was appointed as cultural convener of the Indian Social Club in Salalah, and was duly felicitated for her contributions to Indian Dance by the Honourable Indian Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman. And then, in 2013, Nishi arrived on the Dubai scene to undertake the next stage of her dance journey.
Nishi is an empanelled performer of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, as well as being a ‘Grade A’ artist with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, India. So, naturally, since her arrival in the U.A.E., Nishi Singh has built up a strong following amongst lovers of traditional dance forms. She has performed at many prestigious events and venues to great acclaim recently. And, her public profile was raised still further when she was invited to be a judge by Zee TV for its “Dancing Sensation 2015” Competition.
Nishi set up ‘Taal Kathak’ to spread and promote Kathak in its pure form in Dubai and to create a platform for Kathak education. She is now nurturing local talent. And, she will be joined on stage by a number of her current young students on Friday, 13th November at this special first AAMF dance concert.
In addition to the traditional Kathak style of dance, the programme for this exceptional event will include several other dance styles to serve up even more variety for the Al Ain audience. So, we look forward to welcoming Nishi Singh and her dance troupe warmly for their debut performance in the Garden City.
Refreshments will be available at modest prices in the Old Grandstand, Equestrian Club in the very extensive grounds of the AESGC, located near to the Tawam Roundabout. Details and photos of the impressive Equestrian Club are available at its website:-
