The Al Ain Chamber Orchestra will be performing on Friday, November 21st at the Al Ain International School at 7:30 pm as part of the final concert of the Al Ain Music Festival 2014 entitled “Classics and More: Selected Music of the 20th Century.”
The concert will feature performances by the House of Arts music teachers in the first half and the Al Ain Chamber Orchestra after the interval.
The Al Ain Chamber Orchestra was founded at the beginning of 2013. It all started with a simple idea of establishing a group of expatriate musicians in Al Ain to come together and enjoy playing music together. The group started under the leadership of Dan Turcanu, (photo below), a gifted teacher and composer from the House of Arts playing the violin, Verena Ganter, an exchange student from Germany on the viola and Elke Vogel-Adham on the flute.
The group grew fast, was named “Al Ain Chamber Orchestra”, and new members joined. Naturally, the House of Arts became the sponsor and from there on rehearsals took place at the House of Arts. The orchestra has played in Al Ain at various venues taking part in the Al Ain Music Festival 2013, the House of Arts concerts, and performing their own concerts.
Dan’s leadership galvanized expatriate musicians in Al Ain to come together and enjoy playing a wide variety of pieces. His vision has ensured a strong base of ideals from which the orchestra draws its strength in community, creativity and a love of excellent music. Dan is the backbone of the music itself, arranging pieces for a wide variety of skills and diverse instruments including, besides the usual winds and strings, an accordion, oud, and the Arabic drum. His arrangements offer up familiar notes of classical pieces interspersed with elegant modulations and fresh rhythms.
This fall, the Al Ain Chamber Orchestra underwent a change and was made a society. While Elke Vogel-Adham is the administrative director, Teodor Iliescu has taken on the role of director with his clear vision and extensive experience in achieving excellence.
